PROGRAMME ACTIVITIES

Since the basic function of KAKAU is to fight against the spread of AIDS and to provide assistance to some of the needy victims,six major activities have been designed in a way that will facilitate the achievement of the intended goals. These activities are as follows:-
1.Public awareness :This activity aims at influencing behaviour change which is concerned with enabling attitude and practices that minimize people's vulnerability to infection with HIV/AIDS.The essential focal point of the activity is to raise the concern for the risk reduction and harm minimization through:-
    *Workshops,seminars and meetings :The KAKAU Diocesan Task Force conducts workshops,seminars, and meetings about AIDS within Bukoba Diocese in order to monitor the situation of each Parish and thus undertake required measures.
    *Mass Mobilization through Theater Arts : A special cultural dance group of 20 youths(KAKAU Band)is used to mobilize the masses against AIDS and its effects, through songs,traditional dances ,slogans and distributing AIDS related literature paintings.
2.Send me to School :This activity enables some school going needy orphans in primary and secondary schools to obtain school necessities like school fees,uniforms,pens,pencils,and exercise books.It is our conviction that education is the best means of helping these orphans to be self-reliant in the future.
Over 450 most needy primary school going orphans and 120 secondary school pupils and 50 vocational traineesare supported annually through this programme.
3.Children's Sponsorship :Orphans who were left destitute due to the demise of the parents,are provided with education assistance like school fees,school uniforms,writing materials(pens,pencils,exercise books)and school contributions. Also the activity provides material assistance like food,clothes,beddings,laundry soap as well as carrying out repairs to some of the delapidated homesteads occupied by these orphans.
A number of 85 children are catered for under this activity.
4.People Living With Aids(PLWA) :Strategies are directed towards mobilizing AIDS affected persons to respond and live "positively" with AIDS.The sick are treated with love and respect that they deserve. In this way , the sick accept their condition and continue to lead relatively normal lives. Currently there are over 450 PLWAs beneficiaries under this programme.
In this activity, the following services are offered:-
    *Counseling and Moral Services :Two committed medical personel provide advice to the project clients.This is done by comforting the sick and giving them time to discuss their situation.     *Health Care :The activity provides free medication to the sick.The drugs provided cater for the common health problems facing AIDS affected peolpe in the area.
    *Education to the Sick and their family members :Information regarding transmission ,home based care and ways to live positively with AIDS is given to the sick, their family members,and other community members.
    *Apostolate of the sick :The staff and mobilized volunteers undertake home visit to the sick with the purpose of providing spiritual and moral support to the affected.     *Material Assistance :The activity provides basic needs to the sick ,such as food, soap, and others alike which help them in their daily life.
5.Peer Education : Through this activity, a selected core group of about 40 Primary school and Secondary school students is trained, via workshops and seminars about AIDS with the aim of preparing the group to teach its peers about the disease . The students organize the debates, theater arts at various Primary and Secondary schools. Over 60 peer education activities are staged annually.
